How do I ... Borrow books:

Most Network libraries loan books to Bank Group and IMF staff and retirees. Books should be requested directly from the library that owns the item. Requests are accepted by e-mail, inter-office mail, phone, or fax.

You can identify the library which owns the book by checking the library code on the JOLIS Catalog record under the heading "Held by: " . If you don't know whether any of the libraries own the book, send the author, title, or any information you have to a Network Library and we will check for you. We can also check to see if a new book is on order.

You can find library codes and contact information in the List of Libraries.

How do I ... Check on latest journal issues received: Like books, journal subscriptions are listed in the JOLIS Library Catalog. Catalog records about the journals also list the most recent issues received. There are a number of different ways to find out which library subscribes to a journal. Here is one:

  • First, go to the JOLIS Library Catalog
  • Click on the Library Catalog box
  • Click on the box that says Periodical Title
  • Enter the journal title or part of the title
  • Click on View to see the complete journal information
  • Look for the heading "Latest issues: " on the left side and read across to see what has been received

If too many titles are found, you may need to narrow your search:

You can do this by using either the Browse option or the Term Search option at the beginning of your search. Then choose Periodical Title as above. Browsing will bring up a list of titles beginning with the words you enter. Term Search will look for an exact match on the words you enter.

How do I ... Request copies of journal articles: To order journal articles, send a request to one of the Network libraries. Always let the library know if you have an urgent request. If the library owns the journal, you will be sent either a photocopy of the article or the actual issue. Some libraries, like the Sectoral and IT Resource Center, offer a full photocopy service, while others, like the Joint Library, copy only from selected publications. Most libraries will let you borrow issues of periodicals for a short period of time (usually one week).

Many journals are also available in electronic form on systems like ProQuest Direct, which you can access from your office. Librarians also have full-text access to hundreds of other titles, including many newspapers. Check with a library about the titles you need.

If the library does not own the title you need, we will try and obtain a copy of the article from other sources or through interlibrary loan.

How do I ... Look for journal articles on my topic: Many article references can be found in the JOLIS Library Catalog, where some libraries selectively index periodicals they receive. You will also find over 60 bibliographic and full-text external databases under Database Resources on this Web site.

Many journals indexed may be available in the libraries. Articles found in journals not available in the libraries can be requested through inter-library loan or other document delivery services.

How do I ... Borrow a book the libraries don't have: Many World Bank and IMF libraries will borrow documents from outside libraries for your research needs. These requests are handled by the Inter-library loan (ILL) staff. The IFC Library will process ILL requests for IFC staff. The Joint Library and Sectoral and IT Resource Center also have ILL units to handle outside borrowing.

Contact a library through the List of Libraries to make a request. Or you can e-mail a library now:

IFC Library

Joint Library

Sectoral and IT Resource Center

Please include your full name, room number, and extension in your request.

How do I ... Receive tables of contents for new issues of journals:

Currently, three libraries provide table of Contents Services:

The Joint Library Economics Journals Contents is a Web service with e-mail notification of weekly updates and an online article request function.

The Sectoral and IT Resource Center Contents Service is an electronic, e-mail service in the following areas:

    Sectors:
Agriculture, Air Transport, Education, Energy, Environment, Gender and Children, Mining, Health, Nutrition & Population, Infrastructure, Rail, Shipping, Sociology, Telecommunications, Transportation(general), Urban, Water & Waste Management
    Management/IT:
Management; Information Technology; and Library, Archives and Records Management. Check with the Sectoral and IT Resource Center for more information.

How do I ... Sign up for training on library systems: Training information for Bank and Fund staff is available from this Web site under Library Services.

The libraries sometimes offer special sessions on specific databases; check this site under Announcements or call a Network library for information and schedules. If you would like to arrange specialized training for staff in your department or work group, give your nearest library a call.
