  • Library Network Selected Internet Resources -- The sites included in this web page were reviewed and selected by Library Network research librarians for use by World Bank and IMF staff. Most of the sites are free Internet resources, but we have also included some of the many commercial databases to which we subscribe. We hope the sites will help you answer basic reference questions or identify research resources.

  • Biblioteca Nacional de España (English - Español) -- The Biblioteca Nacional is Spain's highest library institution and is head of the Spanish Library System. As the country's national library it is the centre responsible for identifying, preserving, conserving and disseminating information about Spain's documentary heritage and it aspires to be an essential point of reference for research into Spanish culture.

  • European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET) Networking improving Europe's environment -- In this folder, you will find links around the GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus (GEMET). From here you can browse a web-based version, download terminologies and tools, request a CD-ROM and enter a Newsgoups.

  • EUREKA -- An authoritative multi-lingual directory of language and translation related links.

  • Foreignword -- Is dedicated to the world of languages and translation and more specifically to all the new possibilities brought about in this area by computers and the Internet. On-line dictionaries and glossaries, translation tools, translation memories, machine translation, etc.

  • Glossarist -- A searchable directory of glossaries and topical dictionaries.

  • Go Translators -- Tools for translators. Dictionaries, lexicons, glossaries, newsgroups, mailing lists, etc.

  • Google Web Search Features -- In addition to providing easy access to more than 4 billion web pages, Google has many special features to help you to find exactly what you're looking for.



  • Kadifeli -- Online English-Turkish Dictionary of Computer Terms

  • Language Editions of the WB Disclosure Policy -- An internal site of the World Bank on Information Disclosure Policy. Links to the Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish translations of the policy paper.

  • Language Library -- Find out about the history of words, the nature of sentences, how we convey meaning when we speak.

  • Language Tools -- Learn the meaning of any word, its correct spelling, how to pronounce it and where it originated.

  • NationMaster.com -- A massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations. You can generate maps and graphs with ease on all kinds of statistics. What's more, you can select exactly which countries you want to include.

  • The Official Documents of the United Nations (ODS) -- ODS covers all types of official United Nations documentation, beginning in 1993. Older UN documents are, however, added to the system on a daily basis. ODS also provides access to the resolutions of the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and the Trusteeship Council from 1946 onwards.

  • OECD Glossary of Statistical Terms -- Contains definitions of key terminology and concepts used in OECD publications and commonly used acronyms.



  • Oxford Reference Online -- Provides searchable full text of over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. View a list of the titles included in this collection.

  • Thesauri and other Vocabulary Aids -- Specialized On-line Thesauri.

  • ThinkExist -- ThinkExist is a Quotation Search Engine and Directory with over 90,000 quotations by over 9,000 authors in the English language.

  • Translation Reference Center -- Reference sources about translation: featured articles, news, publications, expert opinion, mail lists, research, language industry events, technology and a lot more.

  • Translator/interpreter directory (ESIT Alumni Assoc.) -- The ESIT Alumni Association (Association des anciens élèves de l'ESIT) provides a directory of translators and interpreters worldwide.

  • Translator's Home Companion -- The single most useful source of information for the professional translator and those in need of translation services.

  • UN Bibliographic Information System -- United Nations - Dag Hammarskjöld Library UNBISnet Catalogue of United Nations documentation and publications indexed by the United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the UN Office at Geneva. Also included are commercial publications and other non-United Nations sources held in New York and Geneva's collections. UNBISnet provides instant access to a growing number of full text resources in the six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). Links to full text of resolutions adopted by the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council, going back to 1946, are included.

  • United Nations Interpretation -- Useful collection of dictionaries, encyclopedias, glossaries and other resources put together by UNOG Interpretation Service

  • UNTERM -- A multilingual terminology database which provides United Nations special terms in all six official UN languages - English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic. The database is mainly intended for use by the language and editorial staff of the United Nations to ensure consistent translation of common terms and phrases used within the Organization.

  • Webopedia -- The only online dictionary and search engine you need for computer and Internet technology.

  • Word of the Day -- Each Word of the Day is an authoritative guide to the pronunciation, definition, and etymology of the word with caveats about any pitfalls in its usage.

  • World Bank Translation Services -- This newly launched external website aims to provide tools and information about translation practices at the World Bank to language vendors and partner organizations. You will find here useful translation and terminology resources, style guides and translation memory tools.

  • WordReference.com -- The WordReference Dictionaries are free online translation dictionaries. A site and service dedicated to providing quick and easy dictionary translations to people reading, studying or working with foreign languages.



  • The Word Spy -- Recently coined words, existing words that have enjoyed a recent renaissance, and older words that are being used in new ways.

  • WorldWorld.com -- This site is a portal to the World, with search capabilities and links to country pages, world news, international organizations and many others additional sites.
